Terms of Service
Last updated 21 September 2026 · Bookcairn is run independently from India · karankumar@gmail.com
The short version: you must be 16 or older, your books and words stay yours, you give us permission to show the public ones, the paid plan is billed by Dodo Payments and can be cancelled any time, and we can remove content that breaks the community guidelines. The long version follows.
1. Who we are and what this covers
Bookcairn (“Bookcairn”, “we”, “us”) is run independently from India. These Terms govern your use of https://peppered.karankumar8239.workers.dev and everything it offers: logging books, cards, the year wrap, public profiles, Discover, and the paid plan. By using the site you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy, Refunds & Cancellation policy, and Community Guidelines, which are part of this agreement.
2. Who can use it
You must be at least 16 years old. If you are under 18, only use Bookcairn with a parent or guardian's permission. You must also be able to form a binding contract under the law where you live.
3. Your account
- Sign-in is provided by Clerk. Keep your login secure and tell us if you think someone else is using your account.
- You may use Bookcairn without an account; your books then stay in your browser only. Signing in moves them to your account.
- One person per account. Usernames are first come, first served. We may reclaim usernames that impersonate someone, are offensive, or are inactive for a long time.
- You can delete your account at any time from the Account page. That removes your books, profile, and plan record from our systems.
4. Your content
Everything you add to Bookcairn, meaning ratings, category tags, one-liners, longer thoughts, your bio, and your handle, is your content. You own it. We do not claim any ownership over it.
So that Bookcairn can work, you give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, display, and reproduce your content on the service, including on your card images and your year wrap. For content you have marked public, that licence also covers showing it on your public profile, on book pages, in Discover, and in aggregate statistics such as a title's average rating. The licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for copies that are already inside images you exported or that other people saved.
Your content stays private by default. Only you decide whether your profile is public and whether each book is visible.
5. Book data, covers, and images
Titles, authors, and cover images come from Open Library and are shown to identify books. Covers remain the property of their publishers and rights holders. The card and wrap images you download include a cover; use them for personal, non-commercial sharing such as social media and messaging. Do not sell those images or use them as your own product. If you own rights in a cover and object to its use, see Copyright & Takedowns.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- break the Community Guidelines, including posting harassment, hate, spam, or sexual content involving minors;
- post anything you do not have the right to post, or that violates someone's privacy or intellectual property;
- scrape, crawl, or bulk-download the service beyond what public pages and our sitemaps normally allow, or use automated tools to create accounts or ratings;
- manipulate ratings, for example by rating books you have not read to move their numbers, or by running multiple accounts;
- probe, overload, or interfere with the service, or bypass access controls or the paid-plan features.
7. The paid plan
- What it includes is described on the Pricing page. A free account syncs a set number of books, shown on that page; books logged beyond it on a paid plan are never deleted or hidden if you later cancel, you simply cannot add more until you are under the limit again. Pro also adds: additional card themes, the animated year-wrap video and all of its slides, and profile customisation. The free plan and everything you have logged on it stay yours if you cancel.
- Who bills you. Payments are processed by Dodo Payments, which acts as the merchant of record. That means Dodo is the seller you are buying from, collects any applicable tax, issues your receipt, and handles refunds through us. Dodo's own terms apply to the payment itself.
- Renewal and intro pricing. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each monthly or yearly period until cancelled. Where a plan advertises a cheaper first period, that price applies to one billing cycle and the ongoing price is shown before you pay. Prices are shown in USD before any tax that applies where you live. Promotional codes shown on the Pricing page are open to everyone; a code applied at checkout keeps applying to renewals of that subscription for as long as it runs without a break. If we withdraw a code we give at least 30 days' notice before it affects your renewal.
- Cancelling. Cancel any time from the Account page. You keep the paid features until the end of the period you already paid for, and you will not be charged again. See Refunds & Cancellation for refunds.
- Price changes. If we change the price, we will tell you by email at least 30 days before it affects a renewal, and you can cancel before then.
8. Our content and trademarks
The Bookcairn name, logo, design, code, the category taxonomy, the reader-type names and descriptions, and the card and wrap templates are ours or licensed to us. You may not copy or reuse them outside the service except for the exported images described above. Book titles, author names, and covers are not ours and are used only to identify books.
9. Moderation and enforcement
We may remove content, hide profiles, restrict features, or close accounts that break these Terms or the Community Guidelines, or that create legal risk for us or harm for other users. Where practical we will tell you why and give you a chance to respond, but we can act first when something is clearly abusive or unlawful. You can appeal by writing to karankumar@gmail.com.
10. Availability and changes
Bookcairn is provided as it is and as available. We work to keep it up, but we do not promise uninterrupted service, and we may change, pause, or discontinue features. If we ever shut the service down, we will give at least 30 days' notice and a way to export your data. Paid-plan holders will be refunded for any unused part of a period we cannot deliver.
11. Disclaimers
Ratings and category tags are opinions of individual readers. We do not verify them and they are not recommendations or guarantees about a book's content. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by contract.
12. Liability
To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you for any claim connected with the service is limited to the greater of USD 50 or the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. We are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses, or for loss of data you could have backed up by exporting it. This does not exclude liability for fraud, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded.
13. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by the laws of India. Before starting any formal proceedings, write to us and we will try to resolve the matter within 30 days. If we cannot, disputes will be heard by the courts of India, except that if you are a consumer in the European Union, United Kingdom, or another place whose law gives you the right to bring claims in your local courts, you keep that right.
14. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. For material changes we will post a notice on the site or email account holders at least 14 days before they take effect. Continuing to use Bookcairn after that date means you accept the new Terms. The date at the top shows the current version.
